Trying to Beat Senioritis

Being in my second to last semester (last real semester and then I have a few classes to take over the summer – one in which just involves wandering around Italy for a month) has left me with an endless case of senioritis. Anything revolving around school just has absolutely no interest to me… being so close to venturing out in “the real world” is making me want to look more into future jobs come Fall, and less so into writing papers for any one of my five classes.

Good for Employment 180 because I am coming up with some great blog posts with some help from my dear friend Google, bad for my goal to stay on the Dean’s List again this semester.

Aside from my typical college classes I want to figure out what I can do to expand my resume and curriculum vitae while I am unemployed. I have found some wonderful articles that have given me a lot of great ideas – some of them are things that I was thinking about doing already, and others are ones that would be so simple that I had not really thought of!

From this U.S. News article about '10 Things to do While Unemployed' I was more encouaged to start my own business (which is something I had been thinking about doing for awhile now - another blog post about that later on). It also gave me the idea to look into temp work... because really right now, that is all I need, something temporary until I leave for Italy in May.

This article from the blog Wise Bread 'Tips for Thriving in Long-Term Unemployment' talked a lot about volunteering, I had always thought about that and had decided in the past to not do it because I need something that pays, but I can either volunteer (adding something to my resume) or sit on my bum all day (with nothing to show for it).

A lot of the articles and blogs I read said to update my resume - obviously - but I think I am going to take full advantage of my college and take any courses that I can from the Career Services at school while I am still here. First on the list a workshop on Wednesday entitled 'Tell Me About Yourself' - we will learn about the different types of interviews, how to prepare for an interview, employers' expectations of you, and what information to share about yourself. I'll be sure to share everything I learn from it!
